High Himalayan Expedition

Overview

Mount Manaslu Expedition lies in the Western part of Nepal, rises to (8163m), above sea level in the Gorkha massif, and is the eighth highest mountain in the world which was first climbed in 1956 by a Japanese expedition therefore it is still considered as Japanese peak by many people.. HW Tillman and Jimmy Roberts photographed Manaslu during a trek in 1950 but the first real survey of the peak was made by a Japanese expedition in 1952. A Japanese team made the first serious attempt on the peak from the Budhi Gandaki valley in 1953. The second successfully expedition submitted by Japanese and South Korean’s in 1971 to 1972, since then due to avalanche that killed five climbers and including 10 Sherpas. Reinhold Messner made the fourth ascent of Manaslu as a member of a Tyroleam expedition that climbed the peak from the Marsyangdi valley in 1972.

Mount Manaslu expedition begins after the arrival of all climbers in Kathmandu, the group will meet up with the staffs of Nepal Adventure Point for introduction and briefing about the trip. The next day is the day for sightseeing in Kathmandu. You will be taken around for a tour of Bouddhanath, Pashupatinath, Patan and Swoyambhunath - the monkey temple. This tour will help you to understand about the historical and cultural background of Nepal, Kathmandu valley and the people of Nepal. The next couple of days are for checking equipments, final preparations, packing and other necessary document for Mount Manaslu expedition.

After official procedure we have scheduled bus to Arughat then commence trek to Khanchok and trek towards Machha Khola, Namrung, Sama Gaon then head towards Manaslu base camp. The trek into the mountain will be both an opportunity to immerse ourselves into expedition life and to acclimatize our bodies and minds for the upcoming ascent. After reaching Sama Goan Village ( 3,525m), other wise known as lower base camp, we will rest for a few days while we acclimatize and our staff will go ahead to prepare the true base camp for the climb. According to local protocols we will employ Sama Goan locals who will carry the expedition equipment the remaining 1300m up to the Base Camp proper. Once we reach Advance base camp, a Sherpa Puja ceremony will be held, after which we can advance onto the mountain. Over the following three weeks we will establish four camps on the mountain and aim to summit.

The route up to Camp 1 involves climbing over rock slabs and moraine, followed by a crevassed glacier with occasional small ice steps to Camp I (5700m/18,700ft). Views of the surrounding peaks will add reference to the uphill climb and the team will enjoy seeing more of the route higher on the mountain, as high as Camp IV. The route to Camp II (6,400m/21,000ft) is considered the technical crux of the climb with some steep sections fixed with ropes and occasionally ladders. The terrain features long 40 degree snow slopes with a few vertical ice steps where front-point championing is required.

Above Camp II the slopes are still quite steep with fixed ropes on intermittent steep sections but in general the route to Camp III (6,900m) is relatively straight forward. Acclimatized climbers can complete this leg in approximately 3-4 hours. From Camp III there is 550m of strenuous climbing to Camp IV (7,450m/26,781ft). A well deserved rest and a decent meal will greatly increase your enthusiasm for a summit bid later that night when you set out for the climb. From this height we rest and climb utilizing oxygen. Summit day will start well before dawn and the climb should take about 6-7 hrs. The climbing is not technical, but any summit day on an 8000m peak is unforgettable. Our strong guide and Sherpa team will fix ropes, break trail and make every effort to assist the group on what will be a memorable day with the objective to reach the summit of the 8th highest mountain in the world. After the summit, you will return to Kathmandu and the farewell dinner will be at typical Nepali restaurant enjoying together with Nepali culture show program.
